What kind of life may lead a man under decapitation sentence, that can be carried out by anyone who recognises him in the street?
The chosen colour is inspired by lapis lazuli (a stone extremely rare and expensive and essential, before the chemical synthesis of colours, to obtain blue). Documents certify that Caravaggio bought a considerable amount of that during his last years; but if, how and where it had been used still remains a mystery…
